Why we can’t guarantee the perfect birth…

Hypnobirthing can’t guarantee the perfect birth, but it can make your experience whole a lot better.

A 2023 article from the BBC suggests that women are under pressure to have the perfect birth and it’s something that any hypnobirthing teacher would love to be able to guarantee you. As someone who is passionate about birth, I would love to say that a hypnobirthing course enables everyone to have a perfect, intervention-free birth but I recognise that this unfortunately doesn’t happen for everyone. What I can do is make sure that you are informed, empowered and in the best possible position to make the right decisions for you. With this in mind, here’s why you should do a hypnobirthing course:

1.       A hypnobirthing course will teach you about labour and childbirth. This means that when the time comes, you (and your birth partner) will know and understand what is happening to your body. Knowing what is happening means you are less likely to feel fearful and fear is the enemy of labour because it stops your hormones and muscles from working effectively, meaning you are more likely to need some medical help.

2.       Hypnobirthing courses teach you about what options are open to you for. It’ll help you understand if you want to say yes or no to something that’s being offered and what the possible implications of doing so are.

3.       A hypnobirthing course will help you feel less anxious about labour. Most of us go through our pregnancies dreading the childbirth part but it doesn’t have to be like that. In my course, we will look at why you feel like that about labour and childbirth and help get rid of the negativity. Being less fearful and anxious about birth will help you to relax when the time comes and make things easier for you.

4.       Doing a hypnobirthing course will also arm you with techniques to help you cope during labour including massage, pain relief and breathing techniques to help you cope.

5.       Other popular antenatal courses will cover some of this stuff but they will also focus a lot more on other aspects, such as what to do with newborns and how your relationship might be affected. Whilst that is definitely still valuable, a good hypnobirthing course will be more useful to you during labour and childbirth and will do more to ease anxieties you might have.

When looking for a hypnobirthing course, it is important to consider what you want out of it. My courses cover:

·       Fear and mindset around childbirth and what we can do to change it

·       Hypnobirthing techniques to help you enjoy your pregnancy and cope during labour

·       Maternity care and how to put together an effective birth plan

·       The physiology of birth. What happens to your body, your baby and how you can make labour more comfortable

It goes without saying that a healthy mother and baby are what everyone wants from birth. Hypnobirthing will help to ensure that the mother (and partner’s) mental health, as well as their physical health, remain intact.
